A Discussion with John Kampfner and Juergen Maier
John has had a 25-year career in international public life. He began as a foreign correspondent with the Daily Telegraph, first in East Berlin where he reported on the fall of the Wall and unification of Germany, and then in Moscow at the time of the collapse of Soviet Communism. He went on to become Chief Political Correspondent at the FT, political commentator for the BBC's Today programme and Newsnight, Editor of the New Statesman and now writes for the Times and appears regularly in other newspapers. He has made a number of programmes for BBC Radio 4 and World Service. His 2020 book 'Why the Germans Do it Better' is his sixth.
Juergen is British-Austrian national and a UK Industrialist. Currently Chair of the Digital Catapult, Co-Chair of the national Made Smarter manufacturing programme and Vice-Chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, Juergen was CEO of Siemens UK until 2019,having worked for the organisation for 33 years. A passionate advocate for a new post-Covid politics and economics, Juergen works for the 4th Industrial Revolution created by new 'frontier industries' to be more inclusive and responsible, create opportunities for all and be a force for re-balancing the UK economy. Since 2020, Juergen has chaired our Liberal Democrat Business & Economy Task Force.
